Israel strikes Hamas sites in Gaza after militants fire rockets

JERUSALEM/GAZA (Reuters) - Gaza militants fired rockets at Israel on Saturday drawing retaliatory Israeli air strikes on Hamas sites, the Israeli military said, a few days after the area's most intense fighting in years. At least four projectiles were fired from Gaza at Israel, the military said in a statement, adding that three were intercepted and one fell short. None of Gaza's militant groups claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.

India's Prime Minister rebukes China whilst holding out 'olive branch'

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, used a strong opening address at the Asia Security Summit to “hold out an olive branch” to China in a bid to reduce tension in the region. In a powerful speech Mr Modi said development should be driven by the “consent of all, not the power of a few” and called for “dialogue not force” to settle disputes. All nations must be treated equally, “irrespective of size and strength,” he said. However, his thinly-veiled attacks on China are being interpreted as no stronger than necessary and a clear signal of mutual respect to India’s regional competitor. Addressing delegates in Singapore at the summit, also known as the Shangri-la Dialogue, on Friday, Mr Modi said: “The world has a better future when India and China work together and are sensitive to each other's interests”. In a swipe at China’s determination to establish itself as the regional hegemon he urged: “Each nation must ask itself ‘are we building a new world or forcing divisions?’”. Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, Senior Fellow for South Asia at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), said Mr Modi’s emphasis on the “rules based international order” was a clear call “for others to follow”. There were “obvious rebukes” to China, but overall the speech sought to “wind down the tension” between the two countries. The summit, organised by the IISS, is taking place this weekend. 575 delegates from 40 countries are attending and Gavin Williamson, the British Defence Secretary, will be speaking on Sunday.

Two lions, two tigers and a jaguar back in captivity after escape from German zoo

Five dangerous predators - two lions, two tigers and a jaguar - which reportedly escaped Friday from a German zoo close to the Luxembourg border are back "in their cages", local authorities said. Officials had earlier asked residents to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors shut as a massive hunt was under way for the big cats. A district spokesman would not immediately give details on the felines' escape or how they were returned to captivity. Police killed a bear and were searching for the other animals that broke out of their cages in a zoo in Luenebach, western Germany on Friday. The US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq acknowledged Friday the deaths of another nine civilians, increasing the toll of non-fighters killed to at least 892. The coalition completed a review in April of 159 potential civilian casualty reports and found five were considered credible, resulting in the nine civilian fatalities, a statement said. Security Council voted on Thursday to renew some sanctions on South Sudan through mid-July and to consider imposing travel bans and asset freezes on six South Sudanese leaders if the country's conflict does not stop by June 30. The resolution, approved by a 9-0 vote with six abstentions, was a watered-down version of a draft measure proposed by the United States, whose ambassador, Nikki Haley, wrote in The Washington Post on Wednesday that the administration had "lost patience with the status quo" in South Sudan.
